Life at halls
Our halls of residence offer more than just a place to live – they're thriving communities where many students make friends for life.
At Manchester, you'll benefit from dedicated support services, fantastic sports facilities and student-led committees to help you make the most of your time at halls.
Student support
You'll have access to a wide range of support services to make sure your time with us is as safe and enjoyable as possible, including:
- 24/7 security with CCTV and patrolling officers. You can contact Campus Support and Security at any time using the number provided on the back of your student ID.
- A dedicated ResLife team made up of postgraduate students and staff who can provide advice on anything from finding fun things to do around Manchester to supporting your health.
- The University also offers a wide range of support, from academic and financial aid to our Counselling and Mental Health Service.
- Domestic teams that clean common areas and shared kitchens every week, although it's up to you to do your washing up and make sure each space is clean enough for our teams to access them. This may differ in some of our partner halls so please check at reception.
Shared spaces
You won’t need to travel to the main campus to find a quiet place to revise, as there are dedicated study spaces with computers, group workspaces and desks across our halls.
Each residential campus also has at least one bar serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. They offer a student-only environment with some of the cheapest drink prices in Manchester, providing the perfect place to get to know your flatmates.
Sports facilities
Playing sports is a great way to stay fit and socialise outside your academic studies. Our sports programmes have something for everyone, from competitive sports to beginner classes.
The University offers a wide range of competitive sporting opportunities, including local leagues, BUCS and the Christie Cup. Alternatively, you can join our Sporticipate programme if you're interested in trying out beginner sports classes or events.

Dedicated hall committees
All our halls of residence have an elected student-run Hall Executive Committee, which is responsible for representing the interests of residents and planning social events.
Let your voice be heard and raise any suggestions or issues you have with your Hall Executive Committee, who, with the support of the Students’ Union and ResLife, will advocate for change on your behalf.
You can put yourself forward to be elected which'll provide you with valuable experience in event planning, budgeting and student representation – all valuable skills for your CV.
Student-run events
During your time in halls, you'll have the opportunity to get involved in a range of events to help you settle in and meet people, such as:
- Plant and poster sales.
- Painting classes.
- Film nights.
- Events such as winter meals and summer balls, quizzes, BBQs and more are run by your Hall Executive Committee. If you become a member of your hall’s committee, you’ll have the opportunity to propose ideas for exciting activities throughout the year.
- Events to help you settle in and meet new people are organised by ResLife, our pastoral care team.
Often these target a specific hall so you can make friends in your hall community. Events have included cinema trips, pamper evenings, breakfast buffets, yoga and games tournaments.
