General requirements for undergraduate courses
If you’re studying for your A-levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB), you can apply for ‘direct entry’ to the first year of a bachelor’s degree.
Applicants with the Bagrut certificate will also be considered for first year entry for most courses (excluding Dentistry and Medicine).
A-level students can find detailed information on the entry requirements for each undergraduate course on its dedicated webpage. For those with the Bagrut, the table below outlines how it aligns to our A-level requirements.
(Please note the unit 5 subject specific grades table which is relevant should your chosen course require specific results in specific subjects.)

Worked example
XYZ Subject Degree requires AAA or above in A-levels, including maths at grade A and either physics or chemistry.
The equivalent being:
Award of the Bagrut with an overall average of 87.5%*, including three level 5 unit subjects with scores of 90%** or higher in mathematics and at least one of either physics or chemistry, and 90% in any third subject.
*As per the overall average table
**As per the unit 5 level scores required for specific A-level subjects, where applicable.
Students who are not eligible for first year entry may be considered for Manchester’s Science and Engineering with an integrated foundation year course. Subject-specific requirements may apply.
Applications for the University’s Biosciences with a foundation year course will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Subject-specific requirements may also apply.
Students can also be considered for the foundation courses run in partnership with the University by INTO Manchester. Subject areas include Engineering and Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (including Management and Law), Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology, for which specific requirements may apply.

General requirements for postgraduate/research courses
Postgraduate taught courses (master’s degree)
Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree with a good final mark can be considered for admission onto a one year master’s degree. The following is for general guidance only:
- A score of 80% or above from a recognised institution is generally considered comparable to a UK Upper Second.
- A score of 70-79% is generally considered comparable to a UK Lower Second.
(Please note: there may be some variance depending upon the reputation and grading system in place at the awarding institution).
Postgraduate research programmes
Many of the University’s departments welcome applications from candidates who offer an exceptionally strong undergraduate academic profile. Otherwise, applicants will be expected to hold a master’s degree from a good university in addition to a good final mark at bachelor degree level.
Postgraduate research programmes are individually supervised and we strongly recommend that prospective applicants make initial enquiries with the potential supervisor or school before submitting a formal application.

English language requirements
All applicants to the University (from the UK and overseas) are required to show evidence of English language proficiency.
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires that every student from outside the UK and the EU must show evidence of a minimum level of English language in order to be granted a UK visa (Tier 4) to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This level is often referred to as the ‘B2 level’.
Additionally, our individual Schools may ask for specific English language proficiency levels that are necessary for their academic programmes. In most cases these requirements are higher than the B2 level. Find out more about our English language policy, including a list of some of the English found language qualifications we accept.
While some Schools ask that the appropriate score has been met before you apply for a course, others give conditional offers subject to applicants achieving our general entry requirement level of English language proficiency before starting the course.
Under certain circumstances, the University may consider IGCSE/O-level English, or International Baccalaureate Language (English) or Language and Literature (English) at high grades as a recognised English language qualification.
Other entry requirements
Faculties and Schools have different entry requirements and some qualifications may not be acceptable for certain courses, so it is important to check with the School directly before you apply.
